Carrying the Wind Lithuania: Baskets and Craft — Part 2

2025/02/21

Share

Beginning on Thursday, February 6, 2025, our physical store has been hosting a special “The One Table” exhibition.

Titled “From Lithuania / Baskets and Craft – Carrying, Gifting, Sounds and Wind,”
the exhibition introduces Lithuanian folk crafts, including baskets made from pine roots and willow.

Each piece is visually delightful, gentle on the body, and quietly uplifting to the spirit.
In this journal as well, we will be introducing the lineup featured in the exhibition.

▽

1. “My Cup of Tea” – Blended Herbal Tea

“My Cup of Tea” is a tea brand from Lithuania.

Rooted in Europe’s long-standing herbal culture, nurtured by its rich natural environment,
these original blended teas are made using tea leaves and herbs sourced from Lithuania and various regions around the world.

Each blend combines several types of fragrant, freshly dried tea leaves and herbs.

There is a wide variety of flavors—for example, this one is “Chamomile & Mint.”

They are available in two formats: loose leaf and muslin sachets.
In the photo, the loose leaf is on the left, and the muslin sachet is on the right.

For this special exhibition, we have also prepared a limited “Tasting Set” of muslin sachets,
featuring four different flavors.

The four flavors are selected at random, so which ones you receive will be a pleasant surprise.

This set is especially recommended for those trying “My Cup of Tea” blended teas for the first time.
It’s also a delightful way to compare flavors and discover your personal favorite.

At the moment, the official online shop “1basketry” (this website) also offers the loose leaf type,
the muslin sachet type, and the muslin tasting set.

We hope you will make use of this opportunity.

You can view the “My Cup of Tea” blended herbal tea page here.

  • The loose leaf type allows the tea leaves and herbs to be fully infused. Watching the leaves gently drift and unfurl is a calming moment you never tire of.
  • This is the muslin sachet type. One sachet can be brewed for about four cups. It can be enjoyed over several cups on your own, or shared with family and friends, and is also well suited for serving to guests.
  • In Lithuania, herbal tea is said to be an everyday drink, much like barley tea in Japan—something enjoyed casually, cup after cup.
The natural flavors of the ingredients come through clearly, with a smooth, pleasant mouthfeel that truly makes you want another cup.
  • Enjoy tea time together with Chocolate Naive chocolates.
They also pair beautifully with meals.

A gentle herbal aroma can be sensed even through the packaging. It also makes a thoughtful choice for a small souvenir or gift.

2.-1 “Chocolate Naive” Chocolates

“Chocolate Naive” is a Lithuanian chocolate maker that carries out the entire process in-house,
from cacao beans to finished chocolate bars.

By overseeing every step of production themselves, they are able to draw out the natural flavors and aromas of the ingredients to their fullest.
This integrated production style is known as “bean to bar.”

This collection, titled “Forager,” is themed around ingredients from Lithuania, the homeland of Chocolate Naive.

For this exhibition, we are offering five different flavors. They include kefir, porcini mushrooms, forest berries—staples of the Lithuanian table—as well as “Ambrosia,” which combines honey and bee pollen.

In addition, Lithuania, like the Nordic countries, has a strong sauna culture. “Black Sauna” is a flavor made using cacao that has been smoked in a traditional Lithuanian-style sauna.

These flavors allow you to experience the food culture and traditions of Lithuania through chocolate,
offering tastes that delight both the body and the spirit.

2.-2 “Chocolate Naive” Chocolate Balls

This is the chocolate ball flavor “Honey & Bee Pollen.”

Honey and bee pollen are coated in honey chocolate.
Bee pollen is rich in vitamins and minerals, and in recent years has also gained attention as a superfood.

A chocolate ball you’ll want to enjoy as a small reward, whether during a break from work or in between household tasks.

Presented in a special case. The packaging box itself is beautifully designed, making snack time feel all the more delightful.

For a treat for yourself, or as a gift for someone special. Perfect for the chocolate season—Valentine’s Day or White Day. It also makes a delightful small gift or a thoughtful token of appreciation.

3.-1 “formuniform” Backpack

This is a backpack by “formuniform,” a brand led by Lithuanian product designer Aistė Nesterovaitė.

It is very lightweight, with two large outer pockets and one inner pocket. It also features a loop for hanging, and can be folded down compactly, making it highly functional.

Made from 100% polyester with water-repellent properties. It is also washable.

From the texture of the fabric and its color to the overall size, this backpack feels refined and exceptionally comfortable to use.

It is by no means a mass-produced item. Each piece is hand-sewn by a small team of artisans, with careful attention paid all the way through final inspection.

It is also recommended as a sub-bag when carrying a basket. I personally use it myself, and even after years of use, it has shown no signs of wear—a testament to the thoughtful and meticulous stitching.

  • This time, we are offering two color options. This one is “Black.”
  • This one is “Seaform.” Both colors are easy to style with a wide range of outfits and come highly recommended.
  • The shoulder straps also function as the drawstring for opening and closing the bag. This makes taking items out and putting them away very smooth and effortless.
  • These large pockets are especially convenient. The shoulder straps are made a little longer, so please adjust them to your preferred length with a simple knot.

3.-2 “formuniform” Drawstring Bag

A drawstring-style bag called the “Drawstring Bag with Strap.”

By adjusting how you use the strap, it can be worn in two ways: as a shoulder bag, or as a simple drawstring pouch.

It is available in two sizes: XS and SS.

This bag also pairs beautifully with basket bags,
working well as a lining inside a basket or as a convenient sub-bag.

The photo shows the XS size in “Red,” paired with a peeled willow basket made by Sigitas.

  • This is the XS size. From left to right: “Red,” “Seaform,” and “Black.”
  • The longer strap allows it to be worn comfortably as a shoulder bag.
  • By tucking the long strap inside, it can be used as a drawstring pouch. This way of using it is especially convenient when placing it inside a basket.
  • こちらの長いストラップも片結びをしてお好みの長さに変えられます。
  • The long strap can also be adjusted to your preferred length by tying a simple knot.
  • Ideal for carrying hand cream, lip balm, and other small essentials as a makeup pouch.
  • A slightly muted red with a calm, understated tone.
  • It pairs beautifully with the natural tones of baskets.
  • Next, we move on to the SS size. This one is “Black.”
  • This one is “Seaform.” It features a design with drawstrings on both sides that can be tightened or loosened.
  • This one is “Red.” Despite its compact SS size, it can hold quite a bit—along with minimal essentials, there’s room for a paperback book, a small bottle, and in this season, even a pair of gloves.
  • It is also very useful when traveling— as a pouch for valuables, or for storing items such as underwear and socks.
  • A unisex bag that is comfortable to use for people of all ages.
It’s also lovely to choose different colors or sizes to share among family members or couples.
  • “Black” and “Seaform” also pair beautifully with baskets and are highly recommended.

4.-1 Wooden Trivet

A trivet made from oak, the national tree of Lithuania.

There are two variations available: a “4×4” type and a “5×5” type, referring to the number of wooden segments arranged vertically and horizontally.

These interlocking wooden pieces are made by the Gaučas brothers. Their grandfather was a beekeeper, and the design is said to be inspired by the lattice structure of beehives.

  • This is the larger “5×5” type. The solid oak wood firmly supports even heavier items such as earthenware pots or frying pans.
  • This is the smaller “4×4” type.
It is just the right size to be used as a pot mat.
While it is a powerful piece made from solid, worked oak,
taking it in your hands and looking closely reveals the natural character of the wood
and the clear traces of handcraft in the joinery, giving it a warm, inviting presence.

4.-2 Wooden Tool Box

This is another oak tool box made by the Gaučas brothers.

It has a characterful appearance reminiscent of a beehive, which served as the original inspiration for the design.

Two sizes are available: “3×3×3” and “3×3×5.”
The larger “3×3×5” size comes with a handle.

  • It can be used to stand cutlery, or to hold stationery such as pens and rulers. It also pairs beautifully with Japanese bamboo and wooden cutlery.
  • *Both the wooden trivets and tool boxes are finished with linseed oil. Due to the natural properties of the material, oil contained within the wood may occasionally seep to the surface.
If you are concerned about oil transfer, we recommend placing a cloth or paper underneath when using them.

5.-1 Peeled Willow Basket – Picnic Basket, XL

Willow baskets are commonly seen throughout European basketry traditions.

In Europe, willow plays a role similar to that of bamboo in Japan. From cradle to coffin, it is said that nearly everything needed in daily life has been made from willow, making it a deeply familiar and essential material for people across Europe.

5.-2 Peeled Willow Basket – Picnic Basket, L

These baskets are made from “peeled willow,” finished by removing the outer bark of the willow.

All of these pieces are from Lithuania.

There are said to be several hundred species of willow, and even among peeled willow baskets, differences can be felt when comparing, for example, Lithuanian pieces with those from Poland—
in their color, texture, and even the weight of the basket.

5.-3 Peeled Willow Basket – Picnic Basket, M

All of these baskets are made from high-quality materials and finished to a beautifully refined standard.

Another appealing feature of peeled willow is how lightweight it feels, even for its size.

5.-4 Peeled Willow Basket – Blanket Basket

This is another peeled willow basket, but a special, larger piece with a naturally developed coloration,
resulting from the way the willow was stored over time.

Although it is brand new, it has a beautiful, vintage-like character, with a gently worn appearance that adds to its charm.

5.-5 Peeled Willow Basket – Oval with Handle

From this point on, all of the baskets introduced are works by Sigitas, a master basket maker.

This handled basket is a convenient size, well suited for outings as well as everyday shopping.

In Sigitas’s baskets, you can immediately sense the excellent condition of the willow splints and the high quality of the materials used.
The weave is even and well balanced, the handle harmonizes beautifully with the basket, and the overall construction is solid and reliable.

  • 5.-6 Peeled Willow Basket – Round with Handle, XS
  • 5.-7 Peeled Willow Basket – Round with Handle, S

The simple, pure whiteness of the basket allows for easy customization—
you can place a drawstring bag inside, or wrap or cover it with your favorite textile.

*The drawstring bag shown in the photo is also available at our physical store.

Our introduction to Lithuanian craft will continue.
Some items will gradually become available through our online shop as well,
so we hope you will enjoy following along.

Thank you very much for your continued support.
