Collection: Walnut
Walnut trees grow naturally in the mountains and woodlands of Japan. For basketry, the bark of walnut trees such as Sawagurumi and Yamagurumi is used. The bark is harvested from spring through the rainy season, when the trees contain plenty of moisture and the bark can be peeled more easily. After harvesting, the bark is dried, sorted, and carefully prepared before it is ready for weaving.
Walnut bark has different colors and textures on its outer and inner surfaces. Each piece has its own natural variations, ranging from pale brown to deep dark brown, and these differences give each basket a distinctive character. The bark is often prepared in broad strips, allowing its natural texture and variations in color to remain visible in the finished basket.
Here, we introduce baskets, handbags, and other everyday items woven from walnut bark. With use, the surface gradually develops a richer luster and the color deepens over time. This changing character is one of the distinctive qualities of walnut bark basketry.
