This ladle is made from Japanese cherry birch, a type of wood harvested in Japan.

Japanese cherry birch belongs to the birch family and is known for its firm, durable character.
Because it has few knots and an understated grain, it blends naturally with food and tableware.
The maker chose this wood for its calm, versatile appearance.

Like bamboo cutlery, it is very lightweight while remaining sturdy.

Unlike bamboo, Japanese cherry birch can be carved from thicker pieces of wood, which allows for gently flowing, curved forms like this.
This view shows the handle as seen from above. From the end of the handle toward the bowl, it becomes slightly narrower.
Seen from the side, the handle forms a gently curved line. This shape makes it comfortable to hold and easy to use when scooping.
The surface of the handle is finished flat, while the underside has a subtle rounded shape.
The bowl of the ladle is generously sized, providing ample depth for serving soups and liquids.
The thickness of the Japanese cherry birch is fully utilized, giving the spoon a well-defined depth toward the tip.
Shown here turned over, the back of the ladle reveals a smooth, continuous line from the handle to the bowl.
While not visually assertive, the natural character of the Japanese cherry birch can be fully appreciated. As shown on the left side of the photo, subtle variations in color may appear within the wood.

As a final step, the ladle is finished with a polyurethane coating that complies with Japan’s Food Sanitation Act.
This finish smooths the surface and helps prevent water and oil from penetrating the Japanese cherry birch,
enhancing the durability of the piece.

Over time, the coating may gradually wear with use,
but with careful handling, the ladle can be enjoyed for many years.

Biting down on the surface or striking it with sharp objects may damage the coating.
If the finish is chipped, water can penetrate the wood, which may lead to darkening or mold.
For this reason, please avoid such use.

For the same reason, using a dishwasher may accelerate wear.
When cleaning, we recommend washing gently with a soft sponge and mild detergent.

With a wooden ladle like this, you might scoop fruit punch from a large bowl or serve iced drinks to share with everyone.

It would also be lovely for spooning plenty of freshly grated tororo over steaming rice.
When gathered around a pot, it can serve as a ladle for sharing dishes at the table.
Placing a pot of warm soup on the table and letting everyone help themselves is another inviting way to use it.

Gentle to the touch, the wooden surface is also kind to pots and tableware, helping to prevent scratches.
Please enjoy using it daily with the dishes you love.

— Two Generations of Cutlery Making in Oita Prefecture —

In Oita Prefecture, there is a craftsperson who has continued making cutlery
since their parents’ generation.

Although they did not originally intend to take over the family craft,
they chose to inherit it and reconsider cutlery making from their own perspective.
Today, they continue to create a wide range of pieces, producing them day by day.

While the previous generation worked exclusively with bamboo,
the current maker sought to expand the range of forms.
They undertook further training in wooden cutlery making,
allowing them to create items that are difficult to achieve with bamboo alone,
such as ladles and spoons with generous depth, as well as plates.

With the belief that “cutlery is something for everyday use,” usability is always placed first.
At the same time, the finished pieces naturally carry pleasing tones
and a sense of design that delights the eye.

Through uncompromising polishing by skilled hands and a carefully applied polyurethane finish,
these cutlery pieces offer a smooth, comfortable feel at the mouth and ease of care,
making them suitable for users of all ages.

Among the many pieces, we believe you will find one that fits comfortably
in your hand and feels just right to use.
