This basket is made from Madake bamboo and Chinese moonseed vines.
Called “Oshiki,” it is a tray-like basket on which offerings and food are placed at Japanese Shinto rituals and meals.
Most of them are finished with wood or lacquer on top of wood, but this one is finished only with bamboo and Chinese moonseed vines.
The side and rim of basket is woven with strips of thinly peeled strips of the hard enamel outer skin of the bamboo.
This process allows the color to change over time to a deeper amber color and shines with a glossy appearance.
One major characteristic of this basket is that over time it changes to a smooth amber coloration.
The opposite of “Migaki” or shaved strips of bamboo is bamboo that is unshaved or “in the skin”.
The bottom face part is woven with unshaved bamboo.
When it was freshly made, it had a brilliant green color.
Over time, the green color fades to yellow and then to amber color.
The changing colors are one of the pleasures of bamboo baskets.
This basket is already in the process of turning amber color,
and will be changing to a deeper color in the future.
When people gather, place a large leaf or similar surface on which to place
a generous portion of rice balls, sushi, etc.
It looks great with a platter of hors d’oeuvres or pizza on top, or with many small plates.
It would be stunning if used not only in the home, but also in restaurants and hotels.
How wonderful it would be to have a large fish dish or seasonal dish served in this basket.
The size of 50cm (19.69″) by 50cm (19.69″) with this shape and high level of finish is unparalleled.
Even without food on it, this basket is sure to be an eye-catcher only when displayed.
Please check size carefully.
