Bamboo crafts in Miyagi Prefecture are famous for their use of traditional thin Shino bamboo. On the other hand, there are still a few bamboo crafts using thick Madake bamboo.
The northern limit of Madake bamboo vegetation is said to be around Ichinoseki City in Iwate Prefecture on the Pacific Ocean side, and baskets made from Madake bamboo are also made in Miyagi Prefecture to the south.
In the past, baskets and colanders made of thin Shino bamboo were large ones for professional use in sake brewing, but nowadays, most of them are small ones used in the kitchen and around the table, such as a rice washing basket, a basket for washing shellfish and mushrooms, and a basket for storing fruits.
Unlike those made of Madake bamboo, which are Shino bamboo, they are truly more of a practical product than they look. They need to be large, rough, and sturdy, and often have plenty of capacity for field work or in cattle ranching.
This basket is called a “Kama-zaru,” and is used to carry a full load of grass for feeding cows, horses, and pigs, or to carry fertilizer for use in the fields.
On this page, we present two sizes, one in L size (60cm=23.62″ in diameter)
and the other in XL size (65cm=25.59″ in diameter).
Both can be considered quite large baskets in this day and age.
However, if several cows, horses, or pigs were actually fed,
this would fill up and run out in no time and repeatedly.
The specifications are almost the same for both sizes.
It may be difficult to use it as a practical item for home use,
but if you have a spacious entrance or garage, it would be fun to think of ways to use it,
such as storing plenty of vegetables or harvested products, gathering various tools,
or storing a family stockpile for disasters, as such a large basket is not easily found.
It will be fun to think of ways to use it.
If you are thinking of using this bamboo basket for industrial use,
please try this light and strong bamboo basket of this size,
which weighs a little over 2 kg.
Please contact us if you need more than one.
Also, due to the very large size of this item,
it may not be able to be shipped to some countries or regions.
In such cases, we will contact you separately to let you know if delivery is possible,
the delivery method, and shipping charges.
