This is a shimekazari called “Ryūja” (Dragon Snake),
which is one of the Oriental zodiac series we introduce at our store,
made to look like a snake, in reference to the year of the snake in the Oriental zodiac in 2025.

The snake is a symbol of “regeneration” and “vitality” because it grows by repeatedly shedding its skin.

They are also said to be the messengers of the god of water,
and are worshipped in rituals such as those for praying for a good harvest and for rain.

It is also thought that the “Shimenawa(a Sacred rope)” itself represents the shape of a snake.

Because of their appearance and unique characteristics, snakes have an eerie and scary image,
and for this reason, people in ancient times seemed to have had a sense of awe towards snakes
and to have regarded them as objects of worship.

This powerful shimekazari in the shape of a large snake is likely to drive away evil spirits
and bring good luck with its snake-like power.

Shimekazari are decorations made from rice straw that are displayed inside and outside the house in preparation for welcoming the New Year’s deity, “Toshigami-sama”.

The Shimekazari introduced here is made using rice straw harvested in the southern part of Nagano Prefecture and is made locally.

The makers are involved in every step of the process, from growing the rice straw to harvesting and making the decorations.

Rice straw, also called “green harvest”, harvested before the rice has ripened.

Rice straw harvesting takes place in the peak of the summer heat, from July to August.

This is a video of the rice straw harvest. Please take a look.

This Shimekazari is made from high-quality rice straw that is also used to make the ring for Sumo wrestling.
The soft green rice straw is carefully woven into a pattern.

Just as the Shimenawa(a sacred rope) itself is said to resemble a snake, the undulating shape of the snake is expressed as it is.
When we asked the maker, he told us that during the process of braiding the straw, he adds straw along the way to make the body part thicker. He said that it is a very difficult process to change the thickness of the straw while checking the balance.
A rope that is tightly woven is supple, but you can also feel a kind of strength of life.
The head part (the photo shows a different product, “Coiled Snake” ). It seems to be a very fine weaving technique that takes a long time.
It looks just like a snake’s scales, and it looks like it could move at any moment. The snake’s tongue is made from silk-wrapped Mizuhiki(decorative Japanese code). Red is a lucky color that represents the vibrancy of life and is also said to ward off disaster.
The powerful face that seems to be able to drive away evil spirits is vividly conveyed. As each piece is hand-made, there may be slight differences in the orientation and length of the two halves of the tongue. Please understand this in advance.
You can feel the power right down to the tip of the tail. Depending on the condition of the straw, there may be parts that are cut or nearly cut off. Please understand this in advance.
As the name “Snake Dragon” suggests, it looks like a dragon ascending to the heavens. It is a figure full of energy.

This is a high-volume size that is enough to be impressive on its own.

Hang it inside or outside the entrance. We think its presence will catch the eye.

As well as hanging them, you could also prop them up against a wall or your own stand.

We also recommend that you display them and enjoy them throughout the year,
even after New Year’s Day.

In order to keep the Shimekazari in good condition,
please do not leave it in the cardboard box after it arrives, but open it and take it out immediately.

If you do not display it immediately after taking it out of the box,
please store it in a cool place that is not exposed to direct sunlight.

After use, you can either take it to the shrine’s collection point or dispose of it as burnable waste.
If you dispose of it as burnable waste, please make sure to follow the waste classification rules of your local government.

The way the body of the snake undulates and widens outwards is also considered to be good luck.
In Japan, this shape is considered to be a good omen, as it symbolizes the development and prosperity of things.

We hope you have a year full of energy.

**Please read the following text to the end and make a reservation
only after you have understood it.**
