This Wooden pestle is made of Japanese pepper tree.
In Japan, it is used to grind sesame seeds and soybeans, and to make fish paste.
Usually used in combination with a Mortar.
In other countries, it may be used to crush hurbs, leaves, etc.

Both the young leaves and flowers of Japanese pepper are used to add color and flavor to dishes, while the rind is used as “powdered Japanese pepper” to spice up dishes.
In Japan, Japanese pepper is used in a variety of ways, but the wood is so hard and resistant to wear that it has long been used as a Wooden pestle.

This Wooden pestle is produced in Wakayama Prefecture, where Japanese pepper is widely cultivated,
and is made from Japanese pepper trees that grow wild in the watershed of the Arita River,
which originates in Mt.Kōya
Wooden pestles are made from trees that no longer bear fruit.

The bark of the Japanese pepper tree is used as it is in this Wooden pestle, which is full of wild flavor.
The following 6 sizes are available:
9cm(3.54″), 12cm(4.72″), 16.5cm(6.5″), 21cm(8.27″), 24cm(9.45″), and 27cm(10.63″)

It is said that the mortar and Wooden pestle were introduced from China to Japan around 1,000 years ago.
In the old days, they were widely used for cooking,
such as grinding soybeans and miso to make miso soup and for grinding sesame seeds, Tofu, and Yams,
and could be said to be a household item.
Nowadays, the use of a mortar and Wooden pestle may be less common due to the spread of pre-machined foods,
but we can still enjoy the taste and pleasure of taking the time and effort to use them.
Freshly ground sesame seeds have an exceptional aroma and flavor.
Why don’t you try it again with this Wooden pestle?
Please check the size carefully and choose the size you prefer.
