In Oita Prefecture, bamboo craftsmanship is widely practiced, making use of the abundant madake bamboo that grows naturally throughout Kyushu.
While white bamboo crafts—made by heating, boiling, or sun-drying freshly cut green bamboo to remove its oils and color—are well-known, this basket is made from unprocessed green bamboo and features a handle.

The surface of the bamboo is finished using the migaki technique, in which the outer layer is lightly shaved to achieve an even tone.
Compared to leaving the natural skin intact, this process creates a more uniform and refined color throughout the basket, enhancing its visual harmony.
Over time, the color of the bamboo also deepens more richly than that of unshaved bamboo with its skin intact.

When not in use, it also works beautifully as a storage basket indoors, or even as a flower basket.
Here, black jetbead, clematis, and chervil larkspur are arranged inside.

Although green bamboo crafts are often associated with a dignified and powerful impression,
the baskets made by this artisan have a gentle, warm presence that reflects the maker’s care and character.
Enjoy watching the color of the green bamboo deepen and change over time.
