In Oita Prefecture, bamboo craftsmanship is widely practiced, making use of the abundant madake bamboo that grows naturally throughout Kyushu.
While white bamboo crafts—made by heating, boiling, or sun-drying freshly cut green bamboo to remove its oils and color—are well-known, this basket is made from unprocessed green bamboo and features a handle.
This basket is woven from high-quality green bamboo that preserves its natural character, using carefully selected materials with minimal blemishes or dark spots.
It can be used for storing vegetables or other ingredients.
The inside is neatly finished and smooth to the touch,
making it suitable even as a toy basket that children can easily handle.
It can also be used as a plant pot cover, a wastebasket,
or for holding slippers at the entrance—an all-purpose basket for various spaces.
Although green bamboo crafts are often associated with a dignified, strong impression,
the baskets made by this artisan carry a gentle warmth and reflect the maker’s careful touch.
