In Oita Prefecture, bamboo craftsmanship is widely practiced, making use of the abundant madake bamboo that grows naturally throughout Kyushu.

While white bamboo crafts—made by heating, boiling, or sun-drying freshly cut green bamboo to remove its oils and color—are well-known, this basket is made from unprocessed green bamboo and features a handle.

This is a strainer made from green bamboo strips, featuring a raised base.

It comes in two sizes: a small one with a diameter of about 8.27″ and a medium one measuring about 10.63″.
The basket is carefully woven with very fine bamboo strips.
Its weave is called “kikuzoko-ami”—“kiku” meaning chrysanthemum and “zoko” meaning bottom—because the pattern resembles the petals of a chrysanthemum flower.
From the center of the basket, vertical bamboo ribs radiate outward, with thin strips woven around them.
Here is the underside of the strainer. The raised base keeps the bottom slightly lifted so it doesn’t sit directly on the surface.
The raised base allows air circulation and helps the basket drain well.
The rim is finished in the “maki-buchi” style, using young and flexible bamboo tightly wound around the edge. The surface of the rim is polished using the “migaki” technique, where the outer skin is gently shaved for a refined finish.
The weaving of the rim also uses green bamboo, but the surface texture differs depending on whether it has been polished or left natural. Over time, both will age and change color beautifully, retaining their individual textures.
Now, let us look at the two sizes. This is the small size.
It is the perfect size for serving one portion of noodles, about 3.5–5.3 oz.
And this is the medium size.
It is suitable for serving about 7.1–10.6 oz of noodles.

This strainer is made from high-quality bamboo with a natural sheen.
While bamboo can be shaved and polished to create a uniform tone,
this one is simply washed, allowing its natural beauty to remain.

Even so, the result is beautifully elegant.

A fine bamboo strainer created through high-quality materials and the hands of a skilled artisan.
Serving soba on this strainer will surely make the noodles taste even more special.

It can be used not only for soba but also for udon, somen, or Chinese noodles.
It also pairs beautifully with tempura, rice balls, or even bread.

This strainer is also chosen by soba restaurants for professional use,
a testament to its reliable craftsmanship and quality.
Please choose the size that best suits your needs.

Green Bamboo Craft of Kyushu

“Green bamboo craft” can be found in many regions across Japan.

Not long ago, such baskets and sieves were everyday tools, made and used by many people.
They were common household items—easily available and inexpensive.

We have even heard stories from customers
who recall making their own bamboo baskets and sieves to use at home.

Times have changed, and so has the world around us.

Yet, seeing the work of those who continue this craft today reminds us of its irreplaceable charm.

These pieces are not only beautiful but also remarkably practical—durable, functional, and pleasant to use.

The beauty of baskets and trays crafted from fine-quality bamboo by skilled hands is striking.
Throughout Kyushu, many artisans have inherited the techniques of master craftspeople from generations past
and continue to create with the same devotion today.
