This is a round bamboo colander tray made from madake bamboo.

Bamboo colanders have long been valued in kitchens for being lightweight and allowing water to drain quickly.

In the kitchen, they are used not only for washing rice and vegetables, but also for draining boiled vegetables or noodles.
At the dining table, they serve well for boiled beans, tempura, fried foods, or chilled somen and soba noodles.

Today, however, many colanders are made from alternative materials like plastic or stainless steel, or are imported and inexpensive. As a result, there are now only a handful of artisans making bamboo colanders in Japan, and domestically crafted bamboo colanders made with skill and care have become increasingly rare.

This round colander is made by an artisan trained in the techniques of “Kyushu-style round colander making,” where even the rim wrapping is done entirely with bamboo.

We offer this round colander in five sizes: Extra Small, Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large.

Available in five sizes:
– Extra Small (approx. 7.1″ / 18 cm diameter)
– Small (approx. 8.3″ / 21 cm)
– Medium (approx. 9.4″ / 24 cm)
– Large (approx. 10.6″ / 27 cm)
– Extra Large (approx. 11.8″ / 30 cm).

Each size refers to the basket’s diameter.

The basic construction is the same for all sizes.
The entire basket is finely woven using a technique known as “yoko-ami” (horizontal weave) or “zarume-ami” (a traditional colander-style weave).
The rim is finished using a method known as maki-buchi (wrapped rim), in which only young, supple bamboo from the first year’s growth is selected. This bamboo is wrapped around both the rim core and the weave in continuous coils. To make the rim strips easier to wrap, the brittle outer skin is shaved off in a thin layer. This results in a softer feel to the touch and a more uniform color. Over time, the color deepens and develops a sheen, even more so than bamboo with the skin left intact.
From above, you can see that it is wrapped tightly and evenly, with almost no gaps.
A wide strip of bamboo runs all the way around beneath the rim. This prevents grains of rice or other contents from getting caught under the rim when transferring them after washing.
Each bamboo strip is carefully crafted, and the basket is woven so finely that it drains water well and is even suitable for washing rice.
Even when the basket is turned upside down, the beauty of the meticulous craftsmanship stands out.
The overall construction is similar, but the vertical rib design differs between baskets up to the Medium size and those in Large or larger. In the larger sizes, each vertical rib is doubled, creating a sturdier structure to match the increased size.
This is the Extra Small size (approx. 7.1″ / 18 cm in diameter), the smallest of the five available sizes.
Placed on a bamboo leaf with two rice balls. You can also use it for edamame, snacks, noodles, bread, or sweets.
This is the Small size (approx. 8.3″ / 21 cm in diameter).
It’s just the right size for serving bread or sandwiches. For noodles, this size is generally used as an individual plate, with one per person.
This is Medium size (approx. 9.4″ / 24 cm in diameter).
While a flat basket of 9.4″ / 24 cm could still be used as an individual serving plate, the Medium size of this basket has added depth, allowing it to hold enough for about two to three servings. Here, it is shown with approximately 180 g of somen noodles.
This is the Large size (approx. 10.6″ / 27 cm in diameter).
The Large (10.6″ / 27 cm) and X-Large (11.8″ / 30 cm) sizes are especially handy for kitchen prep. Their generous dimensions make them easy to use when chopping or washing vegetables and mushrooms before stir-frying or adding to hot-pot dishes. They’re also well-suited for serving family-sized portions of noodles, or for arranging bread for breakfast and bringing it straight to the table as you would with a large plate.
This is the X-Large size (approx. 11.8″ / 30 cm in diameter), the largest of the five available sizes.
It is shown here holding 2 kg / 70.55 oz of green plums. Like the Large size, it is also perfect for washing plenty of vegetables or for plum preparation. For noodles, it can be used to drain, rinse, or serve portions for about three to five people.

Although the sizes vary from Extra Small to Extra Large, each basket is equally sturdy and well-built.
One of the greatest charms of this basket is the refreshing simplicity of being made entirely from bamboo.

It all begins with the artisan’s careful selection of bamboo in their own grove
—work that extends to maintaining the grove itself so that strong, healthy bamboo can grow.
From felling the bamboo to selecting each piece with meticulous attention,
and combining the right tools with practiced skill, the result is a basket made entirely from bamboo.

A basket whose beauty will grow as the green bamboo ages gracefully over time.
We hope you will make it a part of your everyday life.

__Waku Inoue – Crafting Bamboo Colanders__

Born in 2002, Waku Inoue moved to Shimoina District, Nagano Prefecture shortly after birth and grew up in a self-sufficient lifestyle.
Without attending school, he spent his days in the fields and mountains,
playing in nature and gradually developing an admiration for the world of handcrafts.

At the age of 14, he encountered bamboo craftsmanship and traveled around Kyushu to learn from various artisans,
eventually training for six months under a craftsperson in Oita.
He has since returned to Nagano,
where he cuts locally grown Madake bamboo and continues to create tools under the theme of “bamboo tools for daily life,”
making the most of the bamboo’s fresh green color.

While visiting and inheriting the skills and culture of bamboo colanders—once deeply rooted in daily life
—he also adapts them into forms suited to modern living.
He places great emphasis on bamboo grove maintenance, ensuring an environment where good bamboo can thrive.

Balancing work with the importance of play,
Waku spends his days working closely with bamboo, constantly refining his techniques and ideas in the pursuit of making better tools.
