You cannot choose the depth of the black color, the amount of brown coloring, mottled patterns, or the position of the nodes.

Please be aware of these natural variations.

As shown on the product page, there may also be scratches, scuffs, or lines on the outer surface,
cracks or splits around the nodes, or areas where the outer surface has peeled away.

These are characteristics of the natural material and are not defects.
Please understand these characteristics of the material before placing your order.

8) Returns and Exchanges

Please carefully check the length and diameter of the Black Bamboo before placing your order.

We are unable to accept changes, returns, or exchanges after an order has been placed due to customer circumstances,
including selecting the wrong length or diameter.

On this page, we introduce Black Bamboo (Kurochiku) from Wakayama and Kochi Prefectures.

Each piece is individually selected by a bamboo supplier in Wakayama Prefecture specializing in Black Bamboo and shipped directly from the production area.

On this page, Black Bamboo is available in three lengths: 30 cm (11.81″), 60 cm (23.62″), and 90 cm (35.43″). You can also choose the diameter for each length.

When placing your order, please carefully check your preferred length and diameter.

Black Bamboo is a bamboo native to China and belongs to the same group as Hachiku bamboo. It is thinner than Madake bamboo, which is often used for basket making, and is characterized by its dark brown to black outer surface.
This is a Black Bamboo shoot. The bamboo sheath covering the outside is dark brown to black.
However, when the bamboo culms first emerge above the ground, they are green, just like fresh green bamboo.
Over the course of about one to two years, the color gradually changes to dark brown to black. This black color is now thought to come from a plant-produced pigment similar to melanin.
The color also varies depending on the amount of sunlight and the environment in which the bamboo grows, giving each piece its own unique appearance.
Black Bamboo harvested from autumn through winter is stored in the mountains while it dries. The selection and processing then begin.
First, the branches are removed from each piece of bamboo using a sickle.
Then, each piece is cut to the length required for each product.
After the bamboo has been cut to a uniform length and the branches have been removed, the remaining branch stubs are sharp. They are carefully shaved down at each node.
An important step in giving Black Bamboo its beautiful, glossy finish is the oil removal process.
The bamboo is heated using a burner said to reach temperatures of 800–900°C (1,472–1,652°F), causing oil to seep out from inside. The oil is then carefully wiped away with a cloth, giving the Black Bamboo its glossy surface.
At the same time, the bamboo, which bends at each node, is gradually straightened. The bamboo, softened by the high heat, must be worked quickly before it cools—a process that truly requires the skill of an experienced craftsman.

After being straightened, the Black Bamboo has a beautiful luster on its outer surface.

The shades and patterns of dark brown to black vary from piece to piece, giving each one a rich and distinctive appearance.

We have put together a video showing how Black Bamboo is processed into a finished product. Please take a look.
[Music will play]

Now, we will introduce the Black Bamboo by diameter. This is approximately 6–9 mm (0.24–0.35″) in diameter, the thinnest size available.
This is approximately 12–15 mm (0.47–0.59″) in diameter.
This is approximately 18–21 mm (0.71–0.83″) in diameter.
This is approximately 24–27 mm (0.94–1.06″) in diameter.
This is approximately 30–36 mm (1.18–1.42″) in diameter.
This is approximately 39–42 mm (1.54–1.65″) in diameter.
As Black Bamboo is a natural material, there may be scratches or scuffs on the outer surface.
Some pieces may also have lines like these on the outer surface.
There may be cracks or splits around the nodes.
There may also be areas where the outer surface has peeled away. These are all characteristics of Black Bamboo as a natural material. They are not defects, so please be aware of this.

On this page, Black Bamboo is available in three lengths: 30 cm (11.81″), 60 cm (23.62″), and 90 cm (35.43″).

If you do not specify whether you would like a piece with or without a node, we will select one for you.

[30 cm (11.81″) Size]

This is the shortest size and is easy to handle.

Thinner pieces can be used as material for crafts, accessories, and other detailed work.

Thicker pieces can also be used as flower vases by placing a container inside.
In this case, a node is required,
so please write “For use as a flower vase, with a node preferred” in the notes section when placing your order.

Outdoors, they can also be used for small garden dividers or as material for exterior spaces.

[60 cm (23.62″) Size]

Thinner pieces can be used as material for crafts and DIY projects.
This length is also easy to use for arranging several pieces together as decoration or creating small displays.
They are sometimes used as handles for making lanterns at events.

Medium-thickness pieces can be used indoors as rods for hanging noren curtains or hanging scrolls.
They can also be used for displays in shops or interior spaces.

Thicker pieces have a strong presence even on their own.
They can be displayed as they are as interior decoration or used as large flower vases.

[90 cm (35.43″) Size]

At 90 cm (35.43″), this is a substantial length that also works well for indoor use.

For a noren curtain approximately 90 cm (35.43″) wide,
we recommend Black Bamboo with a diameter of approximately 18 mm (0.71″) or more.

Thinner pieces can be used as supports for growing vegetables.
Several pieces can also be combined to create indoor displays,
or used as material for crafts and DIY projects that require a certain length.

Thicker pieces can be used whole or split in half for making bamboo fences or creating objects for events.

It can also be cut to the length you need, making it a good choice when you have not yet decided how you will use it
or when you would like some extra length for processing.

We also accept requests to cut Black Bamboo to lengths other than those listed on this page.
If you would like a custom length, please contact us through our custom order page.

▶︎Black Bamboo Bulk & Custom Orders

As Black Bamboo is a natural material, each piece varies in color and pattern.
You cannot choose the depth of the black color, the amount of brown coloring, or mottled patterns.

As bamboo gradually becomes thinner from the base toward the tip,
the variation in diameter within a single piece is more noticeable in longer pieces.
Please be aware that these are all characteristics of a natural material.

Please check the sizes and choose your preferred length and diameter.
We hope you will enjoy incorporating Japanese Black Bamboo into your everyday life.

Black Bamboo Passed Down in Wakayama

In Wakayama, Black Bamboo has been valued as a local specialty for more than 100 years, since the Meiji period.

Preparing Black Bamboo for use as a material involves many steps.
The process begins with going into the mountains to select, harvest, and transport the bamboo,
followed by removing the branches and branch stubs, cutting the bamboo to the required length,
removing the oil using heat, and straightening any bends.

The way the flame is applied and the heating time are adjusted according to the condition of each piece of bamboo,
and the bamboo is straightened while it is still soft.

This work has been passed down through many years of accumulated experience and skill.

However, today, there are very few craftspeople who specialize in processing Black Bamboo.

In recent years, Hachiku bamboo, which belongs to the same group as Black Bamboo,
has been flowering and dying off in many parts of Japan, and Black Bamboo has also been affected.

Under these circumstances, efforts are also underway to plant and grow new Black Bamboo on abandoned farmland,
so that Black Bamboo can be passed on to future generations.

The Black Bamboo introduced here is shipped directly from a bamboo supplier in Wakayama
that has handled Black Bamboo for more than 100 years and continues to carry on the techniques used to process it.

Today, many Black Bamboo products are imported,
and Japanese Black Bamboo has become more difficult to obtain than it once was.

We hope you will find a place in your everyday life for this Japanese Black Bamboo, carefully finished piece by piece.
