This is a lidded basket handwoven from strips of green bamboo with the outer skin shaved away.

Green bamboo refers to Madake bamboo freshly cut while still retaining its natural green color.

By shaving, the hard enamel-like outer surface is removed,
giving the bamboo a softer look and a glossy, enhanced beauty.

The soft sheen that emerges carries calmness and dignity,
and over time it gradually turns a clear, even amber.

On this page, we introduce the “Almond Basket.”

Seen from the front, it is made with the gozame-ami technique, in which thin horizontal strips are woven around sturdy vertical ribs.
You can see how carefully, and at the same time powerfully, it has been woven. Wherever you touch it, the bamboo feels so smooth that you forget it could ever splinter. Evenly bound Tsudura-fuji vines add a subtle accent.
Its plump, charming shape resembles an almond, which is why it is called the Almond Basket. The vertical stripe of dark brown smoked bamboo on the front adds depth and harmonizes with the almond image.
Though bamboo is a straight material, it has been formed into a rounded, voluminous silhouette.
According to Mr. Kiriyama, the idea for the Almond Basket was originally inspired by the Iriko-kago, a traditional basket from Kyushu.

It serves as a rounded, lidded hand basket.
Depending on the situation, you may go out with the lid on or without.

The almond form itself has a soothing charm,
while the smoked bamboo stripe down the front deepens its character.

When opening the lid, do not pull the knob. Instead, place your fingers under the rim as shown in the photo and lift gently. (The photo shows another basket with the same lid design, the “Slim Basket with Lid.”)
The lid will open smoothly, and the feeling itself is pleasant—please try it in person at our shop. The knob is decorative; using it to open and close may cause damage.

The lid opens with a crisp snap and closes with a gentle click.
A lidded bamboo basket like this seems to promise that something delightful will be found inside.

For example, you might keep sweets for your family inside.
In fact, some people place treats in large Iriko-kago, the model for this design, to serve to guests.

It can also hold herbal medicines, health foods, yarn balls, or other craft and hobby supplies.

Simply having it in a room—or just looking at it—seems to give a little boost of energy.
We hope it will be close at hand in daily life, supporting and brightening your days.

Please note that the color of green bamboo may vary depending on when it was harvested and the condition of the material.
Some pieces may have a deeper green tone, while others may appear lighter or slightly yellowish.
We kindly ask for your understanding that returns cannot be accepted for this reason.

About the Bamboo Baskets by Hiromi Kiriyama

Each basket begins with carefully selected Green Bamboo or Tsudura-fuji vines.
From harvesting and preparing the materials to weaving the basket itself,
every step is approached with attentiveness and precision.

Mr. Kiriyama creates baskets with a clear sense of proportion and balance,
while always considering how the piece will fit naturally into everyday life.

These finely crafted baskets, made from polished Green Bamboo and Tsudura-fuji,
combine a quiet strength with refined design.

Their finish reflects the high level of skill unique to his workshop.
The variety of sizes and shapes has also evolved by listening to the voices of those who use them.

One of the pleasures of these baskets is watching their fresh green gradually deepen
into a warm amber hue over time.

Beyond their exceptional quality, each piece is designed to be practical.
They are baskets meant to accompany daily life for many years to come.
