This is a type of Shimekazari in which the rope is twisted into a straight line of a certain thickness.
Among Shimekazari, the one that is made by braiding rice straw into a straight rope is called a “Shimenawa(Sacred rope)”.
In Japan, this decoration is often displayed at the entrance or on a household shrine.

There are four sizes available, 180cm(70.87”), 120cm(47.24″), 90cm(35.43″) and “60cm(23.62”)”,
depending on the size of the household shrine. (*The photo above shows the 120cm version. )

Shimekazari are decorations made from rice straw that are displayed inside and outside the house in preparation for welcoming the New Year’s deity, “Toshigami-sama”.

The Shimekazari introduced here is mainly made in Edogawa Ward, Tokyo, and uses rice straw harvested in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Pref., and the Narita area of Chiba Pref.

Rice straw, also called “green harvest”, harvested before the rice has ripened.

Rice straw harvesting takes place in the peak of the summer heat, around August.

Since it is too hot to work during the day, they start early in the morning while it is still cool, and then dry the harvested rice straw well over time and store it in a cool, dark place.

The harvested rice straw was piled up in a warehouse with air conditioning and was waiting for its turn to be used.
Just looking at the material of rice straw, you can feel something like life, strength and momentum.

The one we will introduce here is a powerful and well-made rope Shimekazari.

If you keep it out of the sun, it will stay green like this.
Shimekazari has a “moto” and a “ura” part, and this part is called the “moto”. The word “moto” means base or root.
Generally, the “moto” side is attached so that it faces to the right of the “Kamidana”(household shrine) (there are regional differences, and it is sometimes attached the other way around).
This is the “ura”. It means “tip”.
This thick part is called the “wave”. There are two ways of braiding straw rope, ‘right-handed’ and ‘left-handed’, and the rope used in Shinto rituals is generally left-handed. However, even in Shinto rituals, it seems that there are cases where the rope is right-handed, depending on the region or the person making it.
It seems simple to align the parts that suddenly become thin from the thick part, but it requires skill.
Most Shimenawa are decorated with a Zig-zag paper streamer called a “shide”. It is said that the Shimenawa represents clouds and the shide represents lightning, and since lightning often occurs during the rice-growing season, lightning was considered sacred.
Four Zig-zag paper streamers are included in the set. Please attach them as you like. The paper streamers come in three sizes: large, medium and small. We will choose and deliver the size that best suits the size of the Shimenawa.

Please check the video here for how to attach it.

In order to keep the Shimekazari in good condition,
please do not leave it in the cardboard box after it arrives, but open it and take it out immediately.

If you do not display it immediately after taking it out of the box,
please store it in a cool place that is not exposed to direct sunlight.

After use, you can either take it to the shrine’s collection point or dispose of it as burnable waste.
If you dispose of it as burnable waste, please make sure to follow the waste classification rules of your local government.

Generally, after the New Year, people take their Shimekazari to a shrine to have it burned,
but it seems that the ones displayed on the Kamidana are often left up all year round.
In some areas, I hear that the ones for the entranceway are also left up all year round.
Depending on the environment in which they are displayed, the greenish color of the rice straw will gradually change to a yellowish color.

As this Shimekazari is quite long, it may be delivered slightly rolled up to fit inside the cardboard box.
In order to prevent the Shimekazari from becoming too curled up and to keep it in good condition,
please open the box and take out the Shimekazari immediately after it arrives.
Also, please straighten out any curled up parts of the Shimekazari.

If you do not display it immediately after taking it out of the box,
please store it in a cool place that is not exposed to direct sunlight.

For the entrance or the household shrine.
Please choose the size you prefer.

From the top of the photo, 180cm(70.87”), 120cm(47.24″), 90cm(35.43″) and “60cm(23.62”)”
