Hiroshima Prefecture, located near the center of the Chugoku region, is characterized by its vast mountain ranges and its coastline along the Seto Inland Sea.
With agriculture, fishing, and coastal industry all flourishing, the area is sometimes called “a microcosm of Japan.”

Bamboo craft has long been active here as well, supported by the abundance of bamboo groves throughout the region.

There are people in this area who continue working to preserve bamboo craftsmanship as part of the region’s cultural heritage.

They mainly use madake bamboo to create a wide variety of items—from everyday household goods to finely crafted works of art.

The craftsperson who made the early draining baskets once introduced at our shop sadly passed away several years ago.

This basket was made by another craftsperson who inherited his basket-weaving techniques and continues bamboo work in the same area.

Looking at this draining basket, one can feel that the maker has faithfully carried on the spirit and philosophy of the late craftsman.

This page introduces the shallow, rectangular draining baskets in two sizes: Small and Large.

To improve drainage, the smooth outer surface of the bamboo— which does not absorb moisture—faces inward.
Because bamboo skin naturally repels water, it is the ideal material for a draining basket.
The basket features a continuous pattern of clean, square weaving.
The rim is finished using a technique called “migaki,” in which the bamboo surface is gently shaved. Over time, it gradually turns into a beautiful amber tone.
In addition to rattan, the maker also uses stainless steel wire to fasten the rim—a detail that reflects their care and consideration.
Although using only rattan would give a more natural look, it tends to weaken over years of use. By adding stainless steel, the rim gains strength and durability.
The basket’s sides are woven in a gozame-ami pattern, using thicker bamboo strips for the vertical frame and thinner ones for the horizontal weavers.
Two supporting bamboo pieces are attached in an “X” shape on the bottom for reinforcement, helping to support the weight of the contents.
At each corner, the ends of bamboo strips are bent and inserted to form simple legs. These legs lift the basket slightly, allowing airflow underneath.
While we take great care in inspection before shipping, slight variations may occur during delivery—such as uneven leg height that causes a minor wobble. In that case, gently pull and adjust the uneven leg little by little until the basket sits evenly. As shown in this photo, slight warping may also be seen in some baskets. These are natural characteristics of bamboo.
Now, let us introduce each size.
This is the Small size.
It’s convenient for draining dishes and cups for 1 or 2 people.
You can also use it as a basket to place your most-used cups upside down to dry.
It also works well for draining or drying bamboo or wooden chopsticks, spatulas, and cutlery.
This is the Large size.
It is large enough to hold tableware for 2 to 4 people—rice bowls, soup bowls, small plates, and cups.
It’s also suitable for cooling bread or sweets, or for serving fruits. In the photo, it holds tableware for 2 people—rice bowls, soup bowls, cups, chopsticks, and chopstick rests.

Even if you use a dishwasher, this basket is convenient for drying items that cannot go in one—
such as bamboo or wooden utensils, spatulas, knives, ladles, spoons, forks, and chopsticks.

The color of green bamboo varies depending on the season and the way the materials are stored by the craftsperson.
Depending on the timing, some baskets may have lost their green tone and taken on a more yellow hue.

There is no difference in quality or finish between them, and all can be used without any problem.

Because each basket is made from natural green bamboo,
please understand that the color of the one you receive may differ slightly from the photos shown on this page.

When using it as a draining basket,
please make sure to shake off excess water from your dishes before placing them in the basket.

After each use, gently scrub the basket with a tawashi or sasara brush, and let it dry in a well-ventilated place.

If good airflow is difficult to ensure,
it is helpful to use a kitchen ventilation fan to prevent moisture from lingering.

Please note that bamboo can easily develop mold if it stays damp for long periods,
so take care to keep it dry.

Over time, green bamboo gradually changes from yellow to a warm amber tone.
Noticing these quiet changes is part of the joy of living with a bamboo basket.

With its shallow form and light presence, this draining basket is perfect as a daily place for your dishes.
Please choose the size that best fits your needs.
