This is a Shimekazari in the shape of a chicken called “Fortunate Chicken”.
The dawn, when the sky gradually lightens from the deep darkness of night.
The rooster, which dispels the darkness of the night and announces the arrival of a new morning.
The sound of the rooster crowing, which seems to echo through the sky,
is like a call to the bright sun, and it seems to tell us that it is the beginning of a warm, hopeful day.
Also, when pronounced in Japanese, the word for “chicken” is “Tori”.
It is also a familiar symbol of good luck and business prosperity, as the word “Tori” is homophonic with the phrase “Tori-komu”,
meaning “to catch or take in” good fortune and luck.
This Shimekazari is a decoration that expresses the wish for a “fruitful” year.
Shimekazari are decorations made from rice straw that are displayed inside and outside the house in preparation for welcoming the New Year’s deity, “Toshigami-sama”.
The Shimekazari introduced here is made using rice straw harvested in the southern part of Nagano Prefecture and is made locally.
The makers are involved in every step of the process, from growing the rice straw to harvesting and making the decorations.
Rice straw, also called “green harvest”, harvested before the rice has ripened.
Rice straw harvesting takes place in the peak of the summer heat, from July to August.
This Shimekazari is made from high-quality rice straw that is also used to make the ring for Sumo wrestling.
The soft green rice straw is carefully woven into a pattern.
For outside or inside the front door.
Looking at their dignified appearance, you get a sense of freshness that makes the atmosphere around you feel more crisp and bright.
Inside the house, you can use the living room, dining room, bedroom, or anywhere you like.
Why not try it for your shop, such as a restaurant, gallery, or select shop, to bring you good business?
Alternatively, because of the chicken’s cleverness, bravery and the way it values its friends and community,
it is also recommended for display in places such as schools, study groups and community circles.
We also recommend that you display it and enjoy it throughout the year after New Year’s.
In order to keep the Shimekazari in good condition,
please do not leave it in the cardboard box after it arrives, but open it and take it out immediately.
If you do not display it immediately after taking it out of the box,
please store it in a cool place that is not exposed to direct sunlight.
After use, you can either take it to the shrine’s collection point or dispose of it as burnable waste.
If you dispose of it as burnable waste, please make sure to follow the waste classification rules of your local government.
When you gaze at their dignified and imposing appearance,
it feels as if they are about to start crowing with energy.
The rooster(chicken)’s loud crowing may be telling us,
“Don’t worry, today will be a good day, and you’ll be able to overcome any difficulties.”
Wishing you a warm, clear, and hopeful year.
