This sobachoko cup is decorated in sometsuke (underglaze blue painting),
with a pattern reminiscent of irises or ayame flowers.

A sobachoko is a small porcelain cup traditionally used for dipping sauce when eating soba noodles,
but today it is also enjoyed as a versatile vessel at the table.

Its form, with a clean body that gently opens toward the rim, is one of the classic shapes of old sobachoko,
known as the “Canton bowl style.”

When held in the hand, the curve toward the mouth makes it easy for the fingers to rest naturally,
combining graceful appearance with everyday usability.

The design shows leaves and blossoms of irises rising upward with a lively rhythm.
The brushstrokes retain the natural flow of indigo shades, giving the piece a simple yet powerful expression.

Some pieces show traces from the firing, such as small iron spots, scorch marks, or tiny pinholes on the surface.
These irregularities shape the unique character of antiques.

Originally made as a sobachoko—a small porcelain cup for soba dipping sauce—it can also serve well for tea or sake.
In daily use, it may be enjoyed as a small bowl, for side dishes like vinegared vegetables,
or for chilled Oshiruko (sweet red bean soup) or other chilled desserts.

The open rim and the graceful iris motif bring a refreshing presence,
making it a vessel pleasing not only in use but also to the eye.

About antique pieces:
They may show signs such as fine crackles in the glaze (crazing), uneven glaze, kiln marks, pinholes, or slight distortions.
These are part of their character and do not affect practical use.
